Lee's most recent action came with the San Antonio Spurs in Summer League — so he already did that part this year, and it went reasonably well.

Training camp (which people casually call "summer camp" or the team may run as a minicamp) is different. It's the team's own internal preparation, typically starting in late September/early October before the regular season. Only players the team is seriously evaluating for its roster get invited. There are no real games against other teams — it's practices, workouts, and scrimmages within the organization, where a player competes for one of the final roster or two-way spots.

Here's the announcement about Lee: what's being reported isn't a guaranteed roster spot. Both the Boston Celtics and the New Orleans Pelicans will have Lee in camp in August. An August timeline suggests this is more of a pre-camp minicamp/workout invitation — a chance to impress the coaching staff before decisions are made about who continues into the real training camp later in the fall.

Here's the realistic picture of what he'd actually be fighting for at each stop.

The most likely prize: a two-way contract. Given the scouting read on him (a shooter who needs development), a two-way deal is the realistic target. Two-way contracts let teams carry three extra players beyond the 15 on the regular roster; these players bounce between the NBA and the G League and will earn $678,882 in 2026/27, half the rookie minimum. They can be active for up to 50 of a team's 82 games. The August "camp" look is most likely an audition to earn one of these (or an Exhibit 10 / non-guaranteed camp deal that can later convert into one).

Boston Celtics. The standard roster is essentially full. With 14 guaranteed contracts in place, the Celtics will very likely enter the season with the 15th spot open, as they tend to do. On the two-way side, they've already used some slots — Amari Williams signed his second two-way contract with Boston in July, and they also brought in rookie Dillon Mitchell on a two-way. As of the latest reporting they still appear to have a two-way opening, so that — plus the possibility of the open 15th spot down the line — is what Lee would be chasing. Their G League affiliate is the Maine Celtics, where a two-way guy spends most of his time.

New Orleans Pelicans. They have just one open spot on the standard roster, but reporting suggests that's likelier to go to a veteran three-and-D wing or a physical center than a developmental prospect. The more realistic lane is their remaining two-way slot. After signing Jaron Pierre Jr., New Orleans has one available two-way slot, with Hunter Dickinson already under contract.

Both teams reportedly want shooting and three-and-D wings, which is exactly Lee's profile, so the fit makes sense on paper. But he's competing for essentially one two-way slot per team against players the organizations already know. The August camps are a chance to make an impression before those final decisions get locked in closer to training camp in the fall.
